European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos believes ways must be explored to increase international assistance to Ukraine as Russian attacks continue and the country prepares for what could be its most difficult winter yet.
She made the remarks ahead of an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ireland.
The European Commissioner said today’s discussion on Ukraine was “really necessary.”
“We see how the brutal war is becoming even more brutal. In July alone, 436 innocent people were killed. More than 2,000 were injured. I am very glad that together with our partners — the United Kingdom, Canada, Norway, Switzerland and Iceland — we will discuss how we can further help Ukraine as it prepares for a winter that will probably be the worst in its history,” she said.
Kos also reiterated her previously expressed hope that the ongoing negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU would move forward more quickly.
“I expect that we will open the remaining clusters in the negotiations as soon as possible,” Kos said. “Ukraine is delivering on its promises, and we must deliver on ours as well,” she stressed.
Kos also noted that Europe must learn to use all the instruments at its disposal in order to make its voice better heard internationally and ensure a more effective decision-making process.
“It is important how we prepare our European Union so that it can remain strong and decisive when we have 28, 29 and 30 members, and I am very much looking forward to this debate,” Kos said.
