Ukraine’s top-ranked tennis player Elina Svitolina began her US Open campaign in New York with a dominant victory.
Ninth-seeded Svitolina needed just 52 minutes to defeat Argentina’s Solana Sierra, ranked No. 91 in the WTA standings, 6-1, 6-2.
In the second round, Svitolina will face the winner of the match between Australia’s Maya Joint, ranked No. 72, and Liudmila Samsonova, ranked No. 47.
The Ukrainian recorded her 25th main-draw victory at the US Open and advanced past the opening round of the tournament for the 10th time in her career. Svitolina’s best result in New York came in 2019, when she reached the semifinals before losing to American Serena Williams.
Overall, Svitolina is competing in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the 51st time in her career.
The US Open will run until September 13.
