President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Ukraine’s current response to Russian attacks cannot be compared with the invocation of NATO’s Article 5 following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, as Ukraine does not have an equivalent legally binding security guarantee.
“Today, it is primarily Ukraine that is responding to the Russians — to their terror, their strikes, occupation and killings. And this is a just response. The question for all our partners, to whom we are very grateful and who stand with us — and we appreciate that they are with us in this response — is whether it is enough,” Zelensky said.
“Can we compare this with the application of Article 5? Can we compare it with the entire world uniting around that terrible tragedy 25 years ago? We probably cannot compare these things,” he added.
According to Zelensky, Ukraine currently has partnerships with other countries but does not have the same legal security mechanism, primarily because it is not yet a member of NATO.
“Because, in my view, this is a very important security guarantee for our country,” the president said.
