Blocking Ukraine’s seaborne food exports will have a negative impact on global food security.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this during the Yalta European Strategy meeting.
“Today, our food corridor is blocked. It is almost blocked from the Ukrainian side and blocked from the Russian side. And this is a challenge for everyone. I have spoken with Egypt, India, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the Emirates,” Zelensky said.
The President assured that Ukrainians would not be left without food, despite falling grain prices, expensive exports and severe logistical difficulties.
“This will be very difficult for us. But besides Ukraine, other countries will find themselves in a much worse situation, where there will simply be no food. Many nations will have nothing to eat, even if they have the money. That is the reality. It will be like Hormuz, but for agriculture. And this is a serious problem. Ukraine should not be the only country addressing this issue. It is a challenge for many,” he stressed.
Zelensky said that agriculture and energy are currently two major challenges for the entire world.
“And if peace is impossible today because one person does not want it, it is possible to address the issue of an energy ceasefire and food security. Such decisions can be made. We raised these issues a long time ago, but they are particularly relevant now,” the Ukrainian President said.
