World high jump record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh has won gold at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest.
The Ukrainian athlete claimed victory in the Hungarian capital with a clearance of 1.99 metres.
The 24-year-old from Dnipro skipped the opening height and began her competition at 1.91 metres, clearing it on her first attempt. When the bar was raised by four centimetres, Mahuchikh was the only athlete to clear the height without a failed attempt.
Only Australia’s Nicola Olyslagers remained in contention alongside Mahuchikh. At 1.99 metres, both athletes failed on their first attempts, but Mahuchikh cleared the bar on her second. Olyslagers was unable to clear the height, securing the title for the Ukrainian.
The victory was Mahuchikh’s first after three consecutive defeats towards the end of the season, when she missed out on gold at two Diamond League meetings and a World Athletics Continental Tour event.
