Ukraine has proposed that its partner countries ensure an agreement with Russia that would halt attacks on critical infrastructure, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
“If our partners are ready to ensure that Russia genuinely refrains from striking our electricity system, other energy facilities, critical infrastructure and the movement of food supplies, then we are, of course, ready to ensure a corresponding cessation of our strikes. This must be reliable, long-term and have a real impact on people’s lives, rather than collapse after the Russians hold their ‘elections’ and obtain a temporary easing of pressure over petrol and diesel supplies,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram on Monday.
He stressed that “Ukraine is not confident that Russia has any desire to comply with any agreement.”
“Food, energy and other basic elements necessary to sustain life must be protected, and Russian strikes are primarily directed against them. Every day, Ukrainian energy facilities, port infrastructure, logistics and even warehouses storing food and pharmaceuticals are targeted,” the President said.
At the same time, Zelensky noted that “the war must be brought to an end, and a de-escalatory step concerning critical infrastructure could be the first step towards peace.”
“We expect concrete proposals from our partners,” Zelensky concluded.
Earlier on Monday, US President Donald Trump said that Ukraine and Russia had reached a mutual agreement to refrain from strikes on energy facilities. He also linked the rise in global diesel prices primarily to the war between the two countries.
“Ukraine has agreed not to strike Russian energy facilities. Russia has agreed to do the same!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
He also said that the rise in global diesel prices was largely caused by the war between Russia and Ukraine rather than by Iran.
