Ukrainian Railways halted passenger train services 111 times overnight on September 17 due to drone threats, with several services currently experiencing delays.
Oleksandr Shevchenko, head of passenger communications at Ukrainian Railways, reported this.
“Russian forces continue to strike the railway, but we managed to get through the night without casualties. Ukrainian Railways’ monitoring centre initiated 111 stops of passenger trains overnight after detecting a direct threat or determining that a train had entered a potential strike zone,” the statement said.
As a result of the forced stops, a number of services are currently delayed. In particular, trains No. 7/8 Odessa–Kharkiv and No. 53/54 Dnipro–Odessa will travel via an alternative, safer route, adding approximately six hours to their journey times.
Following an attack on a locomotive in the Mykolaiv region, passengers on one train had to travel part of the route by bus and were evacuated several times during the journey.
On the morning of September 17, a Russian drone also damaged the railway station building in Berestyn, Kharkiv region. Passengers and station employees were in a shelter at the time of the attack.
The infrastructure is currently being inspected, while train services to Berestyn have not been cancelled.
