In the night of 16 September, Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces, working in coordination with other units of the Defence Forces, carried out a strike on the Saratov Oil Refinery in Russia.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, explosions and a subsequent fire were reported at the site. The scale of the damage is still being assessed.
The Saratov Oil Refinery is one of Russia’s key facilities for producing petrol, diesel fuel, fuel oil, various types of bitumen, vacuum gas oil, and technical sulphur. In 2023, the plant processed approximately 4.8 million tonnes of crude oil, supplying more than 20 types of petroleum products.
The refinery is directly involved in supporting the needs of the Russian Armed Forces.
