Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science has selected 12 universities where Campuses of Excellence will be established — specialised research centres equipped with new laboratories, modern equipment and IT infrastructure.
The centres will focus on areas including unmanned and space technologies, biotechnology, advanced materials and critical infrastructure.
Universities submitted a total of 27 applications to the CampeX competition, 24 of which passed the formal selection stage. Twelve projects were selected as winners.
The highest score, 821.71 points, went to the National Aviation University “Kyiv Aviation Institute” for its campus dedicated to unmanned and autonomous technologies. Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv ranked second with its advanced materials centre, scoring 815.63 points, while Kyiv Polytechnic Institute placed third with a space technology centre, receiving 803.52 points.
The winning universities will be able to purchase modern laboratory and educational equipment, upgrade research facilities, develop IT and network infrastructure, acquire specialised software, carry out energy-efficiency upgrades and obtain international certification.
The programme’s total budget was previously estimated at around €60 million. Funding is being provided by the World Bank under a higher education development project implemented jointly with the Ministry of Education and Science.
In addition to Kyiv Aviation Institute, Taras Shevchenko National University and Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, the winners include Lutsk National Technical University with a critical infrastructure project, Lviv Polytechnic National University with a digital health project, and Dnipro University of Technology with a project focused on restoring and strengthening the resilience of energy infrastructure.
Campuses will also be established at V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, focusing on advanced materials and biotechnology; the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, focusing on climate-oriented agricultural systems; Sumy State University, for biomedical research and regenerative medicine; and Uzhhorod National University, focusing on neuromedicine and genetics.
Chernivtsi National University will establish a centre for climate regeneration and the sustainable development of urban ecosystems, while Ivan Franko National University of Lviv will develop a campus focused on environmental revitalisation and resource management.
