Ukrainian law enforcement authorities have launched a pre-trial investigation into the alleged execution of two captured National Guard soldiers by Russian forces near Dobropillia in the Donetsk region.
The Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office said the investigation had been opened into a suspected war crime resulting in deaths under Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
“On September 2, two servicemen of the National Guard of Ukraine were at a firing position in a forest belt near Dobropillia. According to the investigation, the Ukrainian soldiers, who were carrying out a combat mission, were captured by Russian forces. They were subsequently executed with automatic weapons,” the prosecutor’s office said.
Urgent investigative measures are currently underway to establish all the circumstances of the incident and identify the Russian servicemen allegedly involved.
Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets said he had sent official letters to the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations concerning the alleged violation of international humanitarian law.
“These cases must be known and documented. Russian crimes must be recorded and investigated, and those responsible must be identified and held accountable,” Lubinets said.
