A jet-powered drone struck the locomotive of a passenger train in the Odessa region, killing the train driver and his assistant, according to preliminary information from Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia).

“Today we have terrible news for the railway family. A jet-powered Shahed struck a passenger train in the Odessa region. According to preliminary information, the attack claimed the lives of two of our colleagues — the train driver and his assistant. All the circumstances are currently being established,” Ukrzaliznytsia said on Thursday.

Despite the threat, the locomotive crew continued operating the train so that its 340 passengers could safely leave the carriages. All passengers and members of the train crew were evacuated, with no injuries reported among them.

“Our colleagues continued doing their jobs until the very end and did everything they could to protect the people for whom they were responsible. We bow our heads in honor of their dedication and will preserve their memory. We stand with their loved ones and will do everything possible to support them during this extremely difficult time,” Ukrzaliznytsia said.
