The European Union plans to adopt its 20th sanctions package against Russia on Monday, February 23, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said.

"Next Monday, we aim to adopt the 20th package of sanctions against Russia," she said at a press conference in Krakow, Poland, on Friday following a meeting of defense ministers from the E5 group of countries.

"Sanctions are working; they are inflicting serious damage on the Russian economy, and each new measure further limits its ability to wage war. Moscow is not invincible. Its army is suffering record losses, and its economy is under great pressure. But Putin will not end this war until the costs outweigh the benefits. That is precisely the point we need to reach," Kallas was quoted as saying by the EU press service.

On February 6, the European Commission presented the EU’s 20th sanctions package targeting Russia, covering energy, financial services, and trade. The legislative proposal now needs to be approved by the EU Council, which requires unanimous consent from all 27 member states.

The E5 group includes Poland, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Germany.
