Sweden will deliver Tridon Mk2 air defense systems to Ukraine

The Ukrainian Defense Forces will receive modern Tridon Mk2 air defense systems from Sweden. These systems will help Ukraine’s air defenses counter “Shahed” drones and other aerial threats.

Sweden will allocate €400 million for their purchase—almost a third of the new €1.2 billion military aid package announced in February.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense explains the value of these systems for Ukraine.

The Tridon MK2 is a mobile medium-range air defense system, first introduced in 2024.

It operates in all weather conditions, day or night. One of its advantages is the relatively low cost per shot. The Tridon MK2 is armed with a 40 mm automatic Bofors 40 Mk4 cannon, capable of hitting targets up to 12 km away at a rate of up to 300 rounds per minute. The system can reduce the firing rate to 200 rounds per minute, conserving ammunition and adapting to specific combat tasks.

The Tridon MK2 cannon uses programmable ammunition, which explodes just before reaching the target, creating a cloud of fragments. This greatly increases effectiveness against drones and cruise missiles.

The system can be mounted on tracked BvS 10 armored vehicles or Scania trucks. Equipped with electric drives, it integrates easily with different platforms, unlike systems with hydraulic drives.

The Swedish Tridon MK2 is a versatile air defense system that combines high effectiveness, a wide range of applications, and low operating costs. It can simultaneously counter multiple threats, including attack and reconnaissance drones, aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles.
