Since the beginning of 2025, Russian forces have carried out 543 attacks on the city of Sumy and nearby communities, killing 72 people and injuring 434, according to data from the Sumy Regional Military Administration .
Officials report that the number of attacks is four times higher than during the entire previous year. The majority of strikes — 455 — were conducted using drones, underscoring Russia’s increasing reliance on unmanned aerial systems.
Other forms of attacks included:
- 38 airstrikes with guided bombs
- 28 shellings using multiple rocket launch systems (MLRS)
- 16 missile strikes
- 6 artillery barrages
“The most difficult month was August — 111 attacks in just one month,” the Sumy Sumy Regional Military Administration stated.
In addition to human losses, the bombardments caused widespread destruction. A total of 303 non-residential buildings were damaged, 27 of them completely destroyed.
Residential areas were also heavily affected:
- 494 houses were damaged
- 25 homes were destroyed entirely
- 245 apartment buildings suffered varying degrees of damage
Local authorities continue to work on restoration, though ongoing attacks pose constant risks to both emergency services and civilians. The Sumy region, which borders Russia, remains one of the most frequently targeted areas in northern Ukraine.
