A Russian drone violated Romania’s airspace on the night of April 17 during Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
This was reported by Romania’s Ministry of National Defence, according to Romania Journal.
It is noted that Romania’s air defense systems lost radar contact with the drone 16 km from the town of Chilia Veche, over an uninhabited area.
“On the night of April 16–17, the armed forces of the Russian Federation carried out another series of drone attacks against civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine, near the border, in the northern area of the Chilia branch. The National Military Command Centre notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations in order to implement measures to alert the population in the northern part of Tulcea County, and a RO-ALERT message was sent at 00:43. Air defence systems monitored two aerial targets operating in the border area. One of the targets entered our country’s airspace, and radar contact with it was lost 16 km southeast of Chilia Veche, above an uninhabited area,” the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.
Romanian military personnel are expected to be dispatched to the area to conduct a search.
The Romanian Ministry of Defence condemned Russia’s actions, stating that they pose a threat to regional security.
“We strongly condemn the actions of the Russian Federation, which endanger regional security and constitute a serious violation of international law. The Ministry of National Defence remains in permanent coordination with allied and national structures responsible, monitoring developments in its area of responsibility and being ready to take the necessary measures to protect the territory and population of Romania. Citizens are urged to follow the recommendations of the authorities and official information issued through institutional channels,” the ministry emphasized.
