Road border crossings between Ukraine and Poland are preparing for an expected increase in cargo traffic.
According to the State Customs Service of Ukraine, the issue was discussed during a four-party working meeting involving the leadership of the Lviv and Volyn customs offices, the Western Regional Directorate of the State Border Guard Service, and representatives of the Polish customs and border authorities.
Ukraine may increase the number of customs officers involved in processing freight traffic, a move expected to improve the throughput capacity of border crossing points.
International transport logistics could change in the near future due to several factors, including:
- the deterioration of maritime logistics because of the security situation in the Black Sea;
- restrictions on navigation along the Danube caused by low water levels;
- the seasonal increase in agricultural exports.
The State Customs Service said these developments are directly affecting Ukraine's imports and exports and are prompting businesses to seek alternative logistics routes.
"Given the expected redistribution of cargo flows, an increase in traffic is forecast at international road border crossing points in Ukraine's western regions. This primarily concerns routes used for customs clearance of freight vehicles with a gross weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes," the agency said.
