A new fuel oil leak from the sunken Russian tankers Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 has been detected in the Kerch Strait.
The leak was discovered after the Russian government announced that fuel oil had been completely pumped out of the vessels, according to satellite imagery.
“Oil slicks are visible in satellite images taken on August 20 and 25. They appeared at the sites where the stern section of the Volgoneft-212 and the bow section of the Volgoneft-239 sank,” the report said.
The leaked petroleum products are spreading southwest and southeast from the wreck sites under the influence of winds and currents.
The Telegram channel noted that the leak was detected after a Russian government commission met on August 21 to discuss efforts to deal with the consequences of the tanker disaster.
Following the meeting, the Russian government issued a statement saying that the pumping of fuel oil from the sunken wreckage had been completed.
