Russia launched a massive overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region on May 14, killing at least one person and injuring dozens, while causing widespread destruction to residential buildings and civilian infrastructure.

According to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, at least 31 people were injured in the capital, including a child. One person was confirmed killed. Rescue operations continued into the morning, particularly in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district, where part of a nine-storey residential building collapsed after being struck.

Emergency crews rescued 27 residents from the damaged building and continued searching for people believed trapped under the rubble. Officials said 18 apartments in the building were destroyed. Fires also broke out in several locations, including among vehicles parked near residential homes.

The attack targeted multiple districts of the capital, including Shevchenkivskyi, Pecherskyi, Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, Obolonskyi, Solomianskyi, Desnianskyi, Sviatoshynskyi and Holosiivskyi. Authorities reported damage to apartment buildings, non-residential premises, a business centre, garages and a car dealership.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said the strikes also caused disruptions to water supply on the left bank of the city.

Police, bomb disposal specialists, medics and rescue workers were deployed across the affected areas. Ukrainian authorities said investigators were documenting the consequences of what they described as another Russian war crime.

The wider Kyiv region was also heavily affected. According to the State Emergency Service, seven people were injured, including a child, while damage and fires were recorded in the Obukhiv, Brovary, Fastiv, Boryspil and Bila Tserkva districts.

In the Boryspil district, five people were injured, among them a three-year-old child. A 56-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man were hospitalized with serious shrapnel wounds, while two other women and the child received medical assistance on site.

Rescuers also evacuated 30 residents from a multi-storey apartment building in the Boryspil district as firefighters worked to extinguish fires in residential areas.
