Italy has proposed including security guarantees for Ukraine in a peace plan, modeled on Article 5 of the NATO Treaty.
This was stated by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at a press briefing, according to ANSA.
“Concrete proposals for the peace plan include security guarantees for Ukraine modeled on Article 5 of the NATO Treaty. This was an Italian proposal that was initially met with skepticism, but later became part of the peace plan documents. We continue to do our work seriously, also aiming to offer possible solutions to our allies, and it seems to me that this is an element recognized by everyone,” Meloni said.
She added that during her meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy she would express support for Ukraine.
“As is well known, in recent years Italy has stood by Ukraine, which has been attacked, without any conditions or reservations. We have done everything possible to help a people defending themselves—and in doing so, also defending us. And this is exactly what we will continue to do, working to build a path to peace that must be sustainable, and on which Italy will not stand idly by,” Meloni said.
It is also reported that Sergio Mattarella will meet with President Zelenskyy 15/04 at 17:00 (Italian time) at the Quirinale (the Presidential Palace in Rome).
