Authorities in Honduras have begun assisting their citizens who were caught in a trap set by Russian recruiters and nearly ended up in the war in Ukraine, according to C News.

The government is providing urgent consular support to men who were lured to Russia with false promises of employment. The victims said they found job postings in agriculture on social media, but upon arrival their passports were taken away and they were allegedly forced to enlist as mercenaries.

Out of the seven Hondurans involved, five managed to flee. They are currently in a reception center awaiting repatriation to Honduras.

The Honduran Foreign Ministry stated in a press release that the individuals concerned are “in good health” and expressed hope for their return in the “coming weeks.”

Two others remain detained by Russian authorities. One of them reportedly said he wants to stay in Russia to continue working, according to Honduran officials. The second has not responded to requests.

Despite this, the Foreign Ministry continues to handle the case in order to free its citizens from what it described as a mercenary trap and bring them back to their country.
