France strengthens Ukraine’s air defense: more Mirage 2000 fighters expected

Ukraine is expecting an additional delivery of Mirage 2000-5 aircraft from France. This will significantly strengthen the country’s air capabilities, as these jets are highly effective at destroying cruise missiles and attack drones, including the Shahed.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has shared what is known about these aircraft.

The Mirage 2000 are multirole fighters equipped with digital avionics. They feature modern radar systems and electronic warfare suites, which greatly enhance their combat capabilities.

The Dassault Mirage jets that Ukraine will receive are classified as 4++—a level above the currently operational MiG-29s in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. These are deeply modernized fourth-generation fighters, whose combat performance, radar systems, and maneuverability approach that of fifth-generation aircraft. They have upgraded avionics, are lighter, more agile than most counterparts, and can carry out combat missions at altitudes up to 18 km.

The Mirage 2000 are equipped with powerful radars and armaments, including precision-guided Magic-2 missiles. This allows them to effectively detect and neutralize low-signature cruise missiles and attack drones such as Shahed, Geran, and Gerbera. They can also intercept enemy tactical reconnaissance aircraft. Thus, the Mirage 2000 play a key role in countering Russian aerial attacks, a priority under Ukraine’s war defense plan.

Moreover, the Mirage 2000’s hardpoints are compatible with all NATO-standard air munitions, enabling the use of Storm Shadow/SCALP missiles, AASM Hammer bombs, and other types of ordnance.

Having these aircraft in service will greatly enhance Ukraine’s air defense, which is especially critical during large-scale missile and drone attacks by the aggressor.

It is worth noting that the transfer of the Mirage 2000 was discussed during the February meeting between Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and French Minister of Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs Catherine Vautrin.

France delivered the first Mirage 2000 jets to Ukraine at the beginning of 2025. To ensure effective use, Ukrainian pilots underwent several months of training in France.
