Peace for Ukraine must be just, accepted by the Ukrainian people and backed by reliable security guarantees rather than imposed as a capitulation, President of the French National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet said in Paris at the opening of the G7 Speakers’ Summit.
“We want peace, but not peace at any price. We want a peace that is agreed upon, not imposed, a peace approved by the Ukrainian people and their representatives,” Braun-Pivet said, addressing Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk.
According to her, such a peace “can be neither a capitulation nor a betrayal of the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations,” including the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.
“We want a just peace, a lasting peace with reliable security guarantees,” the French parliamentary leader stressed.
She recalled that the Coalition of the Willing, led by France and the United Kingdom and now bringing together 35 countries, was formed to help provide such guarantees.
Braun-Pivet also strongly condemned Russia’s latest attacks on Ukraine.
“How far is Russia prepared to go in this horror? Nothing, absolutely nothing, can justify families, children and innocent people paying the price for this murderous madness,” she said.
She recalled that agreements reached at the G7 summit in Évian in June included an increase in military assistance to Ukraine.
“Our objective is clear: today, to defend Ukraine. Tomorrow, to help it fulfil its European and Euro-Atlantic future,” Braun-Pivet said, concluding the part of her speech devoted to Ukraine with the words: “Slava Ukraini!”
