Lithuania’s State Security Department has issued an official warning about a new tactic by Belarus’ KGB to search for and recruit agents online, ERR reports.

According to the agency, the neighboring country’s intelligence services have begun distributing a video on social media and YouTube, recorded in part in Lithuanian. In the video, the authors speculate on issues of social injustice and urge Lithuanian residents to express dissatisfaction with their government. Those willing to discuss these issues are invited to contact representatives of the Belarusian KGB via the secure channel specified in the recording.

Lithuanian intelligence describes the development as a direct provocation. The agency emphasizes that the security services of Belarus and Russia actively use social media not only to identify potential recruits but also to recruit them and maintain ongoing contact.

The State Security Department reminds the public that any malicious actions carried out in the interests of a foreign state carry severe criminal liability under Lithuanian law.
