On the night of September 1, starting at 18:00 on August 31, Russia attacked Ukraine with Iskander-M/KN-23/S-400 ballistic missiles and Zircon anti-ship missiles launched from Russia’s Bryansk, Kursk, Voronezh and Rostov regions; Kalibr sea-launched cruise missiles from Novorossiysk; Kh-31P anti-radiation missiles from airspace over the Black Sea; S8000 Banderol missiles from Bryansk region and over the Sea of Azov; as well as 218 Shahed-type attack drones, around a third of them jet-powered, and Parodiya decoy drones.
The drones were launched from Kursk, Millerovo, Oryol and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia, as well as from occupied Donetsk and Hvardiiske in occupied Crimea.
The main targets of the attack were Odessa and Kyiv regions.
The air attack was repelled by aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups of Ukraine’s Defence Forces.
According to preliminary data, as of 08:30, Ukrainian air defence forces had shot down or suppressed 199 aerial targets:
- five Iskander-M/KN-23/S-400 ballistic missiles;
- two S8000 Banderol missiles;
- five Kalibr cruise missiles;
- 187 Shahed, Gerbera and other types of drones.
Russian missiles and attack drones struck 28 locations, while debris from downed targets fell at 10 locations.
In addition, some Russian missiles failed to reach their targets. Information on where they fell is still being clarified.
