Poland scrambled fighter jets and placed its air defense forces on heightened alert overnight on June 2 due to Russia’s massive aerial attack on Ukraine.
According to Polish Radio, citing the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces, all necessary forces and resources were activated to ensure the security of Polish airspace.
Military aircraft patrolled areas near the Ukrainian border, while ground-based air defense systems and radar reconnaissance units were put on combat readiness.
Around 4:00 a.m. local time, the Operational Command reported a reduction in the threat of Russian strikes on Ukrainian regions bordering Poland. After that, aircraft returned to their bases and air defense and radar units resumed normal operations.
The command added that no violations of Polish airspace were recorded during the attack.
The Polish military also thanked NATO Air Command, as well as the French Air and Space Force and the Royal Netherlands Air Force, for assistance in securing the airspace.
