Moldova will temporarily change border and customs control procedures at three crossings on its border with Ukraine due to security risks to personnel from Russian attacks.
The Moldovan Border Police said the changes will take effect at 08:00 on September 12 and remain in place for 90 days.
The three crossings currently operate under a joint Moldovan-Ukrainian control system, with Moldovan border police and customs officers carrying out checks on Ukrainian territory.
However, due to the deteriorating security situation near the Moldovan-Ukrainian border, Chisinau has decided to temporarily relocate its personnel.
For security reasons, Moldovan border and customs officers will return to Moldovan territory and, from 08:00 on September 12, operate from existing infrastructure on their side of the border.
The changes concern three border crossings:
- Giurgiulești–Reni;
- Briceni–Rososhany;
- Criva–Mamaliga.
The new arrangements will remain in effect for 90 days.
Moldova’s Border Police said the decision is temporary and preventive and was taken because of security risks associated with Russian air attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, including areas close to the Moldovan border.
The changes do not mean that the border crossings will close or restrict their operations. All three crossings will continue functioning, with document and vehicle checks and other border procedures continuing as usual.
Moldova’s Border Police and Customs Service said they would ensure uninterrupted border controls and the continued operation of all three crossings throughout the temporary measures.
Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian drones have illegally entered Moldovan airspace around 70 times, according to data from Moldova’s National Army.
