Moldova has signaled its willingness to join the “coalition of the willing,” a group of countries committed to supporting Ukraine. President Maia Sandu made the announcement on March 23 following a meeting of the National Security Council, according to NewsMaker.

Sandu’s statement came after French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Moldova’s decision to participate. She clarified, however, that the country has only expressed its readiness at this stage.

“Moldova is ready to take part in this coalition. We are already supporting Ukraine by providing training for sappers, and this is exactly the kind of contribution we can offer if the coalition approves our participation,” Sandu said.

The president emphasized that joining the coalition aligns with Moldova’s Constitution and could allow Moldovan specialists to assist with training and demining operations, depending on how the war in Ukraine develops.

Sandu noted that the request must still be reviewed by other coalition members, which include EU countries and candidate states. She expects a decision within a few weeks to a couple of months.

The “coalition of the willing,” launched in spring 2025, is an informal alliance of over 30 countries providing military and logistical support to Ukraine.
