The Italian government supports the United Nations’ call for a global ceasefire during the Winter Olympic Games in Milan–Cortina.

This was reported by Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“In an international context marked by conflicts, sport remains a reliable space for dialogue. The Olympic Games were born in the name of peace. Italy has reaffirmed this commitment by promoting the adoption of the UN resolution on the ‘Olympic truce,’” Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani wrote in a column for Il Messaggero.

He added that in the past year alone, more than 233,000 people were killed as a result of armed conflicts, which also led to more than 123 million displaced people worldwide.

“Italy continues to play a leading diplomatic and humanitarian role, working for peace in Ukraine and Gaza, while also addressing less visible conflicts, such as in Sudan, where millions have been forced to flee. Through humanitarian initiatives such as Food for Gaza and Italy for Sudan, Italy remains at the forefront of efforts to protect civilian populations, particularly children, who are among the most affected by the consequences of war,” Tajani noted.
