In the Sumy region, within the Yunakivka and Khotin communities, the Russian forces continues its tactic of advancing with small assault groups. However, Ukrainian forces have managed to halt their advance.
State Border Guard Service spokesperson Andrii Demchenko shared this on live television.
“The activity of small enemy infantry groups has significantly decreased. This is thanks to every Ukrainian soldier on the ground. Dozens of occupiers have been killed or wounded while trying to cross the border and advance deeper into Ukrainian territory. While at the beginning of such actions the enemy paid little attention to losses, we now see that the deployment of small assault groups to attempt incursions has dropped noticeably,” Demchenko said.
He also noted that the use of quad bikes and other motorized vehicles—previously used to speed up breakthroughs into Ukrainian territory—has also significantly decreased.
In addition, the Russian forces are not using armored vehicles on this section of the front. Demchenko suggested this could be due to a shortage or a deliberate decision to reserve them for future operations.
Despite this drop in activity, Russian forces continue to shell the Sumy, Chernihiv, and Kharkiv regions. The Russian forces are also actively using aircraft in this area, dropping guided bombs and launching unguided rockets.
Demchenko emphasized that while the activity of Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups has decreased, Russia has not stopped using them entirely.
“These groups were most active along the Sumy and Kharkiv borders. Recently, their activity has dropped significantly. However, isolated SRG units are still being detected as they attempt to infiltrate Ukrainian territory. This remains a threat for Chernihiv region as well, even though no such recent attempts have been recorded there,” he said.
According to Demchenko, the missions of these groups remain the same: mining territory, scouting for Ukrainian positions, and attempting small-scale attacks, including efforts to capture Ukrainian soldiers.
He added that along the border with Chernihiv region, the Russians maintains certain units that hold positions and carry out shelling, but no large concentrations or formations have been observed there at this time.
