Ukraine will participate in this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair, one of the world’s largest and most influential publishing events, the Ukrainian Book Institute has announced.
A total of 44 Ukrainian publishers and literary agencies will present their books at the fair, including A-BA-BA-HA-LA-MA-HA, ADEF-Ukraine, ARTBOOKS, ASSA, Astrolabe, ATENA, Bilka, Bohdan, BOOKCHEF, Vesna, Vivat, Vikhola, The Old Lion Publishing House, Gelblau, Horobets, Dach Magazine, Knyholove, Kovyla Publishing, Laboratoria, lit grunt and OVO literary agencies, Literary Gate, Mamino, MISON, My Bookshelf, Nash Format, Orlando, Osnovy, Ranok, SAFRAN, Stiletto and Stylus, Ukraїner, Ukrainian Cartographic Group, Ouroboros, Folio, Chas Zmin Inform, Chas Maistriv, Chytarium, Black Sheep, SHKOLA, Yurinkom Inter, Creative Publishing, Creative Women Publishing, Dach Magazine and ist publishing.
This year’s Ukrainian focus at the fair aims to draw international attention to the losses caused by the war, including the damage suffered by Ukraine’s publishing industry.
The Ukrainian national stand is organised by the Ukrainian Book Institute. Its acting director, Oleksandra Koval, said participation in the Frankfurt Book Fair provides “an opportunity to speak to the world about Ukrainian literature, present Ukrainian authors and publishers, and feel the support of our international partners and friends”.
According to Koval, every Ukrainian book presented internationally is “proof that our culture is alive and stronger than war”.
“Ukrainian publishers continue to work under extremely difficult conditions, with millions of books destroyed as a result of Russian aggression. That is why we must maintain a constant presence in the international cultural space,” Koval said.
Ukraine’s national stand will be located in Hall 3.1, C13. It will serve as a platform for presenting contemporary Ukrainian publishing, introducing international audiences to Ukrainian writers, developing professional contacts, showcasing contemporary and classic Ukrainian literature, and holding cultural diplomacy events.
Over five days, Ukrainian authors, translators, journalists, intellectuals and civil society representatives will take part in international discussions at the national stand and on several other stages.
The programme will include presentations of new publications, many of them German translations of Ukrainian literature, as well as meetings with Ukrainian writers, professional discussions and negotiations with publishers and literary agents from around the world.
