Twelve people, including a foreign national, were killed in Russian strikes across Ukraine on the night of September 1, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
“In total, 12 people were killed, including an Indian citizen, and dozens more were injured in the attack. My condolences to everyone who has lost family and loved ones,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram.
He said emergency response operations have been underway since the night in numerous cities and communities. Nearly 350 rescuers have been deployed in Kyiv and the surrounding region alone.
“A significant number of jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles were used in the attack. Unfortunately, residential and civilian infrastructure has been damaged. In Boryspil, an ordinary five-storey residential building was damaged. Fifty people were evacuated. The necessary services are on site. Businesses were also hit. In total, four people were killed and 13 injured in the city. My condolences,” the president said.
Russian forces also carried out strikes with guided aerial bombs and drones against Odesa and the surrounding region from the evening onwards. Thousands of families were left without electricity, and work is underway to restore power as quickly as possible. Russian strikes also damaged a border crossing with Romania and export infrastructure.
In Kyiv, a strike on a railway depot killed seven people.
Kherson, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk regions also came under attack.
“Russia always calculates its strikes to destroy as much of normal life as possible, and it succeeds only when there are insufficient air defence capabilities. I am grateful to everyone helping Ukraine obtain anti-ballistic systems through PURL and bilateral supplies, and it is crucial that these deliveries increase this autumn. The number of victims of Russian terror directly depends on every new package of assistance,” Zelensky stressed.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, eight people were killed and seven injured in Kyiv as a result of the massive attack, while four people were killed and another 14 injured in Kyiv region.
In Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district, seven employees of Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) were killed in the strike.
